They also aim to discover complementary facets useful to the dissemination of tools and of novel procedures. As a consequence, the Working Parties 'Environmental Protection', 'Loss Prevention and Safety Promotion' and 'Multiphase Fluid Flow' were invited to assist in the organization of sessions in the area of: A Process Integrated Approach for: Environmental Benefit, Loss Prevention and Safety, Computational Fluid Dynamics. A total of 473 abstracts from all over the world were evaluated by the International Scientific Committee. Out of them 197 have been finally selected for the presentation and reported into this book. Their authors come from thirty different countries. The selection of the papers was carried out by twenty-eight international reviewers. These proceedings will be a major reference document to the scientific and industrial community and will contribute to the progress in Computer Aided Process Engineering.

The plant input variables are transformed into the derived variables, which are physically and statistically meaningful for modeling. Then, this study proposed an adaptive modeling approach by employing nonnegative garrote variable selection and auto-regression integrated moving average correction. The high accuracy of the proposed modeling approaches makes the implementation of the model-based control of ratio of air to fuel for improving boiler's efficiency readily practicable.

The aim was to move water through the reservoir network in such a way as to meet consumer demands and level constraints, minimise the cost of electricity, and minimise the loss of chlorine. This was to be achieved by choosing the switching intervals of reservoir inlet pumps and valves, at the same time complying with the allowed minimum interval size of each device. Flows were balanced by Linear Programming. The genetic algorithm gave confidence in the near-optimality of its solutions, through well-defined Pareto fronts between the competing objectives. The method was applied to a 16-reservoir water distribution system in Durban, South Africa. Comparison with an equivalent “dead-band” control showed a 30% improvement in a weighted objective.

The increasing costs of research and the decreasing lifetime of products and processes make the decisions on allocation of R&D funds strategically important. Therefore, ability to predict research trends is crucial in minimizing risks of R&D expenditure planning. The purpose of this paper is to propose a model for efficient prediction of research trends in a chosen branch of science. The approach is based on population dynamics with Burgers' type global interaction and selective neighborhood. The model is estimated based on a training set and an out-of-sample forecast is performed. The research trends of filtration processes were analysed in this paper. The simulation results show that the model is able to predict the trends with a considerable accuracy and should, therefore, be tested on a wider range of research fields.

Electricity-intensive process industries are seeking for new ways to achieve savings on energy costs, taking advantage of the liberalization of electrical markets and integration of distributed generation. Also, the increasing share of renewables requires the grid to adapt to varying electricity availability and consumption patterns. Optimal production scheduling of power-intensive steel making processes with regard to energy cost may lead to significant savings in the electricity bill. For the purpose of this research the steel plant melt shop model described in Harjunkoski & Grossmann (2001) has been adopted as a use case. The steel plant is assumed to participate in a day-ahead electricity market with hourly varying electricity prices and to face financial penalties in case the plant’s actual electricity consumption deviates from the committed level. The resulting scheduling problem is formulated as a continuous-time Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem, enhanced by introducing energy price-related time slots and tested on realistic production data for various problem sizes. The results show that compared to the standard makespan-driven approaches, the process plant is able to save on operational expenditures while satisfying the critical production rules and due dates.

Aviation sector contributes with 2% of the total CO2 emissions due to human activities. Moreover, predictions estimate that air traffic will duplicate in the next 20 years, with the corresponding increasing in CO2 emissions. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has established four strategies to reduce CO2 emissions; one strategy is the development of aviation fuel from renewable feedstocks, known as biojet fuel. In 2009 UOP Honeywell received a patent for its process to produce aviation fuel from renewable feedstocks. The process considers the transformation of vegetable oil through hydrogenating, deoxygenating, isomerizing and selective hydrocracking to generate propane and hydrocarbons fuels. The resulting aviation fuel is very similar to the fossil one, with the only difference that the first one does not contain aromatic compounds. Due to this, the ASTM standard established the use of biojet fuel in mixtures with fossil jet fuel with up to 50% of the bio-fuel. Also, it is important to remark that in this moment the process of UOP Honeywell is the only one certified for the production of aviation fuel from renewable feedstocks. In this work we propose a model for the production of biojet fuel, obtaining an estimation of the conversion of the reactions of the process of UOP Honeywell. Also, the optimization of the purification stage is performed using a multiobjective genetic algorithm with constraints, which is coupled to Aspen Plus process simulator, in order to generate results considering the complete models of the process. Results show a high conversion of the vegetable oil (castor oil) to biofuels (biojet fuel and green diesel); also, energy can be generated in the process as result of the conditioning of the stream that is fed to the distillation train.
