This research uses air pollution data, information about the locations of the air quality monitoring stations, and political events data from 2016 to 2017 to investigate the possible existence and characteristics of China's routine short-term environmental policies aimed for ambient air quality. The results of multiple difference-in-difference suggest that air quality in the urban area, where ambient air pollution levels are usually higher due to population density, is lower on diplomatic events dates, while there is limited evidence that air quality is better in the urban area on domestic events dates. Therefore, this research reveals that there are short-term policies taking place on diplomatic events dates.

This dissertation assesses the associations of residential proximity to a major roadway and residential ambient fine particulate matter exposure with artery calcification, a correlate of atherosclerosis, among Framingham Heart Study participants. It also explores using quantile regression to model outcomes with distributions similar to that of artery calcification, which is zero-inflated and right-skewed, an excess of zeros followed by a long tail to the right. Chapter I examines associations of residential distance to a major roadway and residential fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure with coronary artery calcium Agatston score (CAC) among Framingham Heart Study participants living in the Northeastern U.S. CAC is a quantitative estimate of total coronary atheroma and a strong risk factor for coronary heart disease. We observed no associations of these exposures with the presence, extent or progression of CAC. Chapter II examines associations of residential distance to a major roadway and residential PM2.5 exposure with thoracic aortic calcium Agatston score (TAC) and abdominal aortic calcium Agatston score (AAC), correlates of systemic atherosclerosis. There were no associations of these exposures with the presence or extent of TAC or AAC or with AAC progression. The direction of some estimates ran counter to expectation. Overall, these exposures were not strongly related to artery calcification among participants living in a region with relatively low levels of and little variation in PM2.5.

A guide to the principles and methods of air quality assessment aimed at measuring population exposure to ambient air pollutants and estimating the effects on health. Addressed to policy-makers as well as scientists engaged in air quality monitoring, the book responds to the failure of most monitoring systems to provide data that are useful in estimating and managing threats to health. The need for exposure data on populations at special risk is also addressed. Throughout, emphasis is placed on methods of monitoring and modelling that are cost-effective, targeted, and appropriate to local and national conditions. The report has six chapters. The first introduces WHO activities related to air quality management and explains the need for monitoring systems capable of assessing health impact. The types of information required for health impact assessment are described in chapter two, which outlines several methods of monitoring and modelling that can be used to measure the level and distribution of exposure to air pollutants in populations, identify population groups with high exposure, and estimate adverse effects on health. Chapter three formulates a general concept of air quality assessment, offering advice on principles for designing a monitoring network, interpreting and reporting data, and solving problems with quality assurance. Also included is a comparison of the advantages, disadvantages, and costs of different methods for air quality monitoring. Against this background, the fourth and most extensive chapter describes specific methods for the monitoring of carbon monoxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, lead, and atmospheric cadmium. Monitoring strategies for each pollutant are presented according to a standard format, which covers health effects, sources and exposure patterns, monitoring methods, recommended strategies for monitoring and assessment, and a practical example. Olfaction impairment (OI) is an often underreported, common sensory deficit that can lead to a host of adverse health conditions, quality of life issues, and is a predictor of 5-year mortality. Environmental exposures, including very fine particulate matter (PM2.5), are believed to be a potential risk factor in the loss of smell but previous research into this association has been limited. We therefore collaborated with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences' Sister Study, which had been originally designed to examine the relationship between environmental exposures and cancer, to test a large sub-sample (n=4020) of their population in order to identify participants with olfaction impairment. Our multivariable logistic regression analysis found that those in the highest exposure group were more likely to suffer from olfaction impairment when compared to those in the lowest exposure group, with an OR = 1.55 (95% CI: 1.40, 1.72) after adjusting for all relevant confounders. Results were similar for all instances of PM2.5 yearly average measurements. Further quantile regression analyses showed that the greatest effect of ambient air pollutants on olfaction was for those whose smell tests fell below the 42nd quantile, indicating that PM2.5 may exacerbate OI rather than instigate it. We conclude that higher levels of PM2.5 were associated with olfaction impairment and that the effect may have been greater for those with an already declining sense of smell.
