Bio-Instructive Scaffolds for Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine explores musculoskeletal tissue growth and development across populations, ranging from elite athletes to the elderly. The regeneration and reparation of musculoskeletal tissues present the unique challenges of requiring both the need to withstand distinct forces applied to the body and ability to support cell populations. The book is separated into sections based on tissue type, including bone, cartilage, ligament and tendon, muscle, and musculoskeletal tissue interfaces. Within each tissue type, the chapters are subcategorized into strategies focused on cells, hydrogels, polymers, and other materials (i.e. ceramics and metals) utilized in musculoskeletal tissue engineering applications. In each chapter, the relationships that exist amongst the strategy, stem cell differentiation and somatic cell specialization at the intracellular level are emphasized. Examples include intracellular signaling through growth factor delivery, geometry sensing of the surrounding network, and cell signaling that stems from altered population dynamics. Presents a self-contained work for the field of musculoskeletal tissue engineering and regenerative medicine Focuses on how materials of structures can be designed to be resistant while promoting viable grafts Contains major tissue types that are covered with a strategy for each material and structure

Overuse injuries of the musculoskeletal system are common occurrences. Yet most existing volumes on cumulative trauma disorders deal with the subject from an ergonomic and occupational therapy standpoint, and do not provide the all-encompassing synopsis that physicians demand.Overuse Injuries of the Musculoskeletal System, Second Edition, answers the need by presenting a complete overview of the methods for diagnosing and treating the overuse injuries that affect the musculoskeletal system as a whole. Each chapter includes the definition, origins, clinical picture and diagnostics, and treatment for the given injury. The book goes beyond diagnosis and treatment by identifying etiological factors and discussing ways to prevent overuse injuries. This new edition retains the successful systematic format that made the first edition a bestseller and an invaluable tool for orthopaedists, physical therapists, rheumatologists, radiologists and sports medicine practitioners. This version includes a new chapter on radiologic diagnosis, new chapter on overuse injuries in female athletes and supplements previously-existing chapters with new material.

Axial spondyloarthritis is the commonest inflammatory arthritis affecting the spine. Typically first presenting to a variety of primary and secondary care professionals, the high global disease burden of this condition has created a need for increased awareness of this condition across a rangeof rheumatology specialties.A pocketbook aimed at the non-specialist reader Axial Spondyloarthritis is the essential guide to this common condition. Focusing on the practical implications of developments in classification, diagnosis and treatment, this easily accessible text fully covers the broader spectrum of the disease.Concise and fully illustrated, this addition to the Oxford Rheumatology Library covers the history and pathophysiology of axial spondylitis, alongside detailed sections on treatments, complications and manifestations of the condition. With each section supported by a handy key points section, AxialSpondyloarthritis is a useful and constructive resource for any practitioner or trainee encountering this condition.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Symposion on Shoulder Joint Replace ment held at the Kieler Yacht Club in conjunction with the 35th Annual Meeting of the Northwest German Orthopaedic Surgeons at Kiel in 1985. Since the advent of suitable implant materials hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder was explored in the 1950s; total shoulder joint replacement was first reported in 1971. As interest in solutions to problems of the shoulder is growing, it appeared timely to present to interested clinicians the possibilities and limitations of a proce dure as seen after nearly two decades of trials and experience. This volume is meant to give a comprehensive overview of the bases, the development, the alternatives, the state ofthe art and, an outlook on some future trends. The number of patients with problems warranting shoulder arthroplasty is rela tively small. We consider this a blessing. This may be the reason why the number of surgeons who ventured in this field has remained small, even after implants became available - testimony of an awareness, that shoulder surgery is difficult. The editors consider themselves fortunate to have been able to call on a number of those individuals, who were involved in first trials and in their evaluation. The editors are especially indebted to those from overseas who took it upon themselves to come, share their experience and join in the discussion.

In recent years, there have been considerable developments in techniques for the investigation and utilisation of enzymes. With the assistance of a co-author, this popular student textbook has been updated to include techniques such as membrane chromatography, aqueous phase partitioning, engineering recombinant proteins for purification and due to the rapid advances in bioinformatics/proteomics, a discussion of the analysis of complex protein mixtures by 2D-electrophoresis and RPHPLC prior to sequencing by mass spectroscopy. Written with the student firmly in mind, no previous knowledge of biochemistry, and little of chemistry, is assumed. It is intended to provide an introduction to enzymology, and a balanced account of all the various theoretical and applied aspects of the subject which are likely to be included in a course. This book is exceptional in providing detailed state of the art guidance on all aspects of transfer of the latissimus dorsi tendon for indications including irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears, irreparable subscapularis tears, and shoulder replacement. In addition to clear, well-illustrated descriptions of arthroscopically assisted surgical technique, readers will find helpful information on biomechanics, surgical indications, post-transfer rehabilitation, and complications and their management. Outcomes from individual studies and meta-analyses are evaluated, and a feature of special interest is the presentation of experiences and results in a series of more than 430 patients using the surgical technique first described by Enrico Gervasi more than 10 years ago. This technique involves modifications in both preparation of the footprint for the latissimus dorsi tendon and the biomechanical features of the tendon transfer and is very different from the procedure proposed by Christian Gerber. The book will be of high value for all orthopedic surgeons who perform this complex shoulder surgery, as well as for residents and fellows-in-training.
