Abstract: BACKGROUND: Biochar amendment is a promising tool to improve the soil quality and, consequently, higher crop yield has received more attention during last decades. The positive effects of biochar have been attracting more attention especially in the areas with low precipitation rates, such as the Middle East, due to low soil organic carbon content, higher drought intensity, and increasing demands for food production. However, biochar can lead to lower herbicide efficacy, resulting in higher consumption of herbicides. In this study, the impact of two biochars on soil properties, plant growth, and fomesafen efficacy under rain‐fed condition was investigated. RESULTS: Biochar amendment at the rate of 5 t ha −1 improved soil quality and plant growth by 40–200% and 46–57%, respectively, compared to the control. The increase of biochar application rate from 5 t ha −1 to 15 t ha −1 showed small additional positive effects on soil and lentil as the tested crop plant, whereas the growth of weeds elevated by 200% in this case. CONCLUSION: Albeit biochar application could be an effective way to improve the soil fertility, the potential risk of weed outbreak in the long term should be evaluated carefully before the use of biochar amendment at field scale. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

Biochar is the carbon-rich product which occurs when biomass (such as wood, manure or crop residues) is heated in a closed container with little or no available air. It can be used to improve agriculture and the environment in several ways, and its persistence in soil and nutrient-retention properties make it an ideal soil amendment to increase crop yields. In addition to this, biochar sequestration, in combination with sustainable biomass production, can be carbon-negative and therefore used to actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with potentially major implications for mitigation of climate change. Biochar production can also be combined with bioenergy production through the use of the gases that are given off in the pyrolysis process. The first edition of this book, published in 2009, was the definitive work reviewing the expanding research literature on this topic. Since then, the rate of research activity has increased at least ten-fold, and biochar products are now commercially available as soil amendments. This second edition includes not only substantially updated chapters, but also additional chapters: on environmental risk assessment; on new uses of biochar in composting and potting mixes; a new and controversial field of studying the effects of biochar on soil carbon cycles; on traditional use with very recent discoveries that biochar was used not only in the Amazon but also in Africa and Asia; on changes in water availability and soil water dynamics; and on sustainability and certification. Biochar application aims to improve the soil properties and increase its carbon stable reservoir. The aim was to evaluate the effect of the use of biochar in soils with Eucalyptus urograndis, under different fertilization rates in tree growth. The experiment is in Su00e3o Jeru00f4nimo da Serra (Paranu00e1, Brazil), in a Red-Yellow Latosol, as a factorial in 4 randomized blocks with subdivided plots, with and without biochar in plots, and 3 fertilization rates in subplots. The treatments were: T1 - without biochar and without fertilizer; T2 - without biochar and fertilizer rate reduced by 20%; T3 - without biochar and commercial fertilizer rate; T4 - with biochar and without fertilizer; T5 - with biochar and fertilizer rate reduced by 20%; and T6 - with biochar and commercial fertilizer rate. Each plot comprised of 36 trees spaced of 3 m u00d7 3 m. It was applied 9 kg of biochar (1 kg/tree or 3.21 t ha-1) in strip with 1 m of width and incorporated 15 cm with a grid. The commercial fertilization (NPK at planting 4:42:6 and second dose 15:05:30) were of 166 g/tree. The tree height (AP) and stem basal diameter (DC) were measured in 20 trees/plot at the 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months age. The AP and DC at each age varied between treatments with and without fertilization. However, there were no effect reducing the fertilizer rate neither with the biochar application until 18 months old. The effect of biochar on soil quality attributes and carbon storage are being evaluated.
