Cardioskeletal Myopathies in Children and Young Adults focuses on plaques that kill people in their 40’s-50’s and the way they start to form in young adulthood. The Annals of Family Medicine report that approximately half of young adults have at least one cardiovascular disease risk factor (Mar 2010), and an increase in cardiovascular mortality rates in young adults was substantiated in a study at Northwestern Medicine (Nov 2011). Given the increasing recognition of genetic triggers behind all types of cardiovascular disease, and the growing population of young adults with primary or acquired myocardial disease, the need has arisen for a reference that offers a comprehensive approach to the understanding of basic, translational, and clinical aspects of specific muscle diseases while making the link between young adult and adult health. Reveals the link between cardiac muscle disease and skeletal muscle disease Explains how genetics and environmental factors effect muscle function of diverse origins Designates current and novel therapeutic strategies that target both cardiac and skeletal muscle systems

Effectively diagnose the complete range of pediatric pathologies, from neonatal disorders through adolescence. Intended for a broad audience including general and pediatric pathologists, pediatricians, surgeons, oncologists, and other pediatric subspecialties, Stocker & Dehner’s Pediatric Pathology is widely recognized as the definitive go-to comprehensive clinical reference in the unique subspecialty of pediatric pathology – which, unlike other subspecialties, is defined by an age group rather than an organ system or process. The tumors that occur in infants and children are distinct from those that develop in adults, and they often exhibit exceptional clinical behavior, thus requiring different diagnostic and therapeutic protocols. Authored by a host of prominent authorities on this challenging area, the fourth edition of Stocker & Dehner’s Pediatric Pathology was designed to be a comprehensive volume on all major aspects of the pathologic anatomy of childhood disorders, providing the in-depth, richly illustrated guidance you need to confidently evaluate and dependably report your findings. Sweeping updates in this edition put all of the very latest knowledge and techniques at your fingertips.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is traditionally referred to as idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC), which includes genetic forms of DCM. The patients present with a wide range of symptoms like dyspnea, orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, arrhythmias or complications associated with DCM. The diagnosis is based on exclusion of the various identifiable causes of systolic left ventricular dysfunction, such as ischemic cardiomyopathy, hypertensive cardiomyopathy, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, myocarditis secondary to viral or other causes, peripartum cardiomyopathy and cardiomyopathies secondary to amyloidosis, hemochromatosis, sarcoidosis, and due to drug toxicity. The sophisticated and expensive diagnostic tests might not be feasible for a typical Indian patient. This prompts us to emphasize the need for corroborating the clinical clues with the available affordable investigative tests that also offer reasonably valid results. The medical management of congestive heart failure is vital to the management protocol of DCM. The roles of heart transplant, cardiomyoplasty and surgical devices have to be weighed from patient to patient with a clear understanding of the etiology of the disease. The recent improvement in the prognosis of DCM presents an encouraging picture to the researchers and practitioners dedicated to the development of drugs and devices to improve the life expectancy of patients of DCM. This clinical update module has been formulated to update the readers on the existing and emerging treatment strategies widely followed and recommended by practitioners of international repute. The essential features of the medical and surgical management have been discussed in detail. Moreover, a comprehensive discussion on the occurrence and management of DCM in pediatric patients has also been incorporated in this book. The book is an honest attempt to provide the medical practitioner with a wide knowledge platform about DCM and its clinical implications.

Heart Failure: Bench to Bedside helps address a significant need to develop new paradigms and to identify novel therapeutic targets for this pervasive disease. An authoritative contribution to the field, this book provides a detailed description of new findings and emerging methodologies, as well as a critical clinical evaluation of the complex HF syndrome and future therapies. Heart Failure: Bench to Bedside includes a primer on gene profiling and bioenergetics of the normal heart and a discussion of the molecular, genetic, biochemical and cellular techniques critical to understanding HF. Further chapters discuss cardiac remodeling, oxidative stress, and alterations in other organs and systems that are often associated with HF. This book thoughtfully evaluates current and forthcoming diagnostic techniques and therapies, pharmaceutical and pharmacogenomic-based individualized medicine, gene and cell-based therapies, and the search for new frontiers. Heart Failure: Bench to Bedside presents a clear view of up-to-date approaches to clinical diagnosis and treatment, as well as offering insightful critiques of original and creative scientific thoughts on post-genomic HF research.
