This volume is a collection of case studies designed to instruct advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the art and science of modeling applied to biological problems. Students with quantitative science background (some knowledge of differential equations) are introduced to the diversity, excitement, and accessibility of problems in the life sciences, and exposed to the intellectual tools for successful mathematical modeling. Each chapter distills lectures given by a leading researcher during a Special Year in Mathematical Biology at the University of Utah in 1995-96. Authors were asked to provide an in-depth exposition of a crucial problem in their area of expertise. The resulting case studies lead students through the formulation, solution, and interpretation of cutting-edge research, catapulting them directly into the research process. To emphasize the unifying power of mathematical methods in biology, authors, have drawn from three highly active areas of research in the life sciences: ecology, physiology, and cell biology.

This workbook offers an investigative case study for each unit of the book. Each case study requires students to synthesize information from one unit of the text and apply that knowledge to a real-world scenario as they evaluate new information, analyze evidence, plot data, or seek explanations. This workbook includes two new case studies: one on avian influenza, and one on hedgehog developmental pathways.

Biotechnology is referred to as one of the key enabling technologies of the 21st century. It has the potential to offer solutions for a number of health and resource-based problems the world is facing, such as unmet medical needs and fossil fuel dependency. Considerable effort and investment has been expended in recent years to try and improve the outcomes of technology transfer in order to fulfill this potential. This book presents seventeen best-practice case studies on the topic of effective technology transfer in biotechnology. The selected case studies focus on technology transfer offices, funding models, incubators, education and clusters. Each presents an overview of an initiative that was deployed in Europe with the aim of supporting and stimulating the transfer of biotechnology discoveries and technologies from research laboratories to society. Readers are provided with a critical assessment of each initiative and policy makers, entrepreneurs, cluster managers and research institute managers will find inspiring lessons they can draw on when developing and implementing similar initiatives elsewhere. These cases are the product of research undertaken as part of the ETTBio (Effective Technology Transfer in Biotechnology) project, co-financed by the European Union (ERDF — European Regional Development Fund) and made possible by the INTERREG IVC Programme. ETTBio commenced in January 2012 and concluded in December 2014. This critically acclaimed text takes a modern and completely unique approach to the study of cell biology. Its overriding theme is that cellular structure, function, and dysfunction ultimately result from specific macromole¬cular interactions. The text takes readers from an explanation of the "hardware" of molecules and cells to an understanding of how these structures function in the organism in both healthy and diseased states. An exquisite art program allows readers to better visualize the molecular structures.
