‘Recent Advances in Elastomeric Nanocomposites’ reviews the recent progresses in the synthesis, processing as well as applications of elastomeric nanocomposites. Elastomers are a very important class of polymer materials and the generation of their nanocomposites by the incorporation of nano-filler has led to significant enhancement of their properties and, hence, expansion of their application potential. Most of the studies related with these materials are present in the form of research papers. Here, the authors present a comprehensive text covering the whole of the subject. The book is tailored more from the applications point of view, but also provide enough introductory material for research scholars new to this field.

This book is an update to the first edition compiled and published in 1990 by William Woishnis. A lot has changed in the field since 1990 and a lot has not changed. There are new plastic materials. There has been a huge turnover in ownership of plastics producing companies. There has been a lot of consolidation, which of course means discontinued products. Thus, this update is much more extensive than the usual "next edition." It has been reorganized from a chemistry point of view. Plastics of similar polymer types are grouped into nine chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction with a brief explanation of the chemistry of the polymers used in the plastics. An extensive first chapter has been added as an introduction that summarizes the chemistry of making polymers, the formulation of plastics, testing and test methods, and plastic selection. Most plastic products and parts are expected to be used in environments other than room temperature and standard humidity conditions. Chapters 2-10 are a databank that serves as an evaluation of plastics as they are exposed to varying operating conditions at different temperatures, humidity, and other factors. Over 900 graphs for more than 45 generic families of plastics are contained in these chapters. Chapter 11 contains extensive mechanical and electrical data in tabular form. The tables contain data on several thousand plastics. Similarly, Chapter 12 contains thermal data on several thousand plastics. Data from the first edition have only been removed if those products were discontinued, and many products were. Product names and manufacturers have been updated. • Detailed introductions of plastics properties, testing procedures, and principles of plastics design. • The only "databook" available on the effects of temperature and humidity conditions on plastics and elastomers. • More than 1,000 graphs and tables allow for easy comparison between products. • Covers more than 70 types of plastics, and summarizes the chemistry of each type.

Elastomers form a special class of materials characterized by a unique combination of useful properties such as elasticity, flexibility, toughness and impermeability. The uses of elastomers include typical industrial and engineering applications such as seals, hoses, insulators and tyres, and special applications such as medical aids, various implants or artificial hearts. The properties of rubber products depend not only on the characteristics of elastomers, but also on the various additives and ingredients mixed into the basic elastomer to form a rubber compound. The selection of additives and their incorporation into the rubber to improve the properties of a basic elastomeric material is still based more on experience and art than on a rational or scientific approach. To help the rubber technologist to rationalize the very complex task of rubber compounding, this book surveys the properties of elastomers and particular groups of rubber compounding ingredients and chemicals. The reader will find fundamental information on the production, properties and application of all basic materials used for fomulating rubber compounds, i.e.

Rubber Technology: Compounding and Testing for Performance is a practical guide to cost-effective formulating of rubber compounds to achieve optimal processing and performance. It provides a thorough discussion of the principles of rubber compounding, rubber testing, and how various compound changes affect different properties and test measurements. Rubber compounding is discussed as a series of interdependent systems, such as the elastomer system, the filler-oil system, the cure system, among others. A holistic approach is used to show how changes in these different systems will affect specific compound properties. Much attention is given to tradeoffs in properties and emphasis is placed on finding the best balance for compound cost, processing properties, and product performance. New in this third edition is the updated and extended section on silicone elastomers as well as the significantly expanded and newly written chapters on recycled rubber and precipitated silica and non-black fillers.

Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology The Third Edition of the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology is built on the solid foundation of the previous editions. All of the articles have been rewritten and updated and many new subjects have been added to reflect changes in chemical technology through the 1970s. The new edition however will be familiar to users of the earlier editions: comprehensive, authoritative, accessible, lucid. The Encyclopedia remains an indispensable information source for all producers and users of chemical products and materials. In the Third Edition emphasis is given to major present-day topics of concern to all chemists, scientists, and engineers—energy, health, safety, toxicology, and new materials. New subjects have been added especially to polymer and plastics technology, fuels and energy, inorganic and solid-state chemistry, composite materials, coating, fermentation and enzymes, pharmaceuticals, surfactant technology, fibers, and textiles. Excerpts from reviews of the Third Edition "…invaluable…should find a place in all libraries used by chemists." —Microchemical Journal "…‘bible’ of chemical technologists…normally a part of any library." —Electrochemical Progress "…initial volume…an excellent start in bringing forth new knowledge in composite form." —Journal of the American Chemical Society "…a whole new encyclopedia…well illustrated…really impressed with the quality." —Chemical Engineering "…an invaluable source of authoritative information…" —Chemical Processing "Kirk-Othmer is universally regarded as a reference work of par excellence. It stands supreme in the field of chemical technology…" —The Chemical Engineer "Libraries that can afford the investment…would be well advised to make room for this valuable source." —Journal of Medicinal Chemistry
