In a gripping, accessible narrative, a veteran science journalist lays out the shocking story of how the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic happened and how to make sure this never happens again Over the last 30 years of epidemics and pandemics, we learned nearly every lesson needed to stop this coronavirus outbreak in its tracks. We heeded almost none of them. The result is a pandemic on a scale never before seen in our lifetimes. In this captivating, authoritative, and eye-opening book, science journalist Debora MacKenzie lays out the full story of how and why it happened: the previous viruses that should have prepared us, the shocking public health failures that paved the way, the failure to contain the outbreak, and most importantly, what we must do to prevent future pandemics. Debora MacKenzie has been reporting on emerging diseases for more than three decades, and she draws on that experience to explain how COVID-19 went from a potentially manageable outbreak to a global pandemic. Offering a compelling history of the most significant recent outbreaks, including SARS, MERS, H1N1, Zika, and Ebola, she gives a crash course in Epidemiology 101--how viruses spread and how pandemics end--and outlines the lessons we failed to learn from each past crisis. In vivid detail, she takes us through the arrival and spread of COVID-19, making clear the steps that governments knew they could have taken to prevent or at least prepare for this. Looking forward, MacKenzie makes a bold, optimistic argument: this pandemic might finally galvanize the world to take viruses seriously. Fighting this pandemic and preventing the next one will take political action of all kinds, globally, from governments, the scientific community, and individuals--but it is possible. No one has yet brought together our knowledge of COVID-19 in a comprehensive, informative, and accessible way. But that story can already be told, and Debora MacKenzie's urgent telling is required reading for these times and beyond. It is too early to say where the COVID-19 pandemic will go, but it is past time to talk about what went wrong and how we can do better.

A guide to the pandemic economy: essential reading about the long-term implications of our current crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has unleashed a firehose of information (much of it wrong) and an avalanche of opinions (many of them ill-founded). Most of us are so distracted by the everyday awfulness that we don't see the broader issues in play. In this book, economist Joshua Gans steps back from the short-term chaos to take a clear and systematic look at how economic choices are being made in response to COVID-19. He shows that containing the virus and pausing the economy—without letting businesses fail and people lose their jobs—are the necessary first steps.

The global response to the Covid-19 pandemic is the greatest science policy failure in a generation. We knew this was coming. Warnings about the threat of a new pandemic have been made repeatedly since the 1980s and it was clear in January that a dangerous new virus was causing a devastating human tragedy in China. And yet the world ignored the warnings. Why? In this short and hard-hitting book, Richard Horton, editor of the medical journal The Lancet, scrutinizes the actions that governments around the world took – and failed to take – as the virus spread from its origins in Wuhan to the global pandemic that it is today. He shows that many Western governments and their scientific advisors made assumptions about the virus and its lethality that turned out to be mistaken. Valuable time was lost while the virus spread unchecked, leaving health systems unprepared for the avalanche of infections that followed. Drawing on his own scientific and medical expertise, Horton outlines the measures that need to be put in place, at both national and international levels, to prevent this kind of catastrophe from happening again. We’re supposed to be living in an era where human beings have become the dominant influence on the environment, but Covid-19 has revealed the fragility of our societies and the speed with which our systems can come crashing down. We need to learn the lessons of this pandemic and we need to learn them fast because the next pandemic may arrive sooner than we think.

This volume presents a comprehensive account of the COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the novel coronavirus pandemic, as it happened. Originating in China in late 2019, the COVID-19 outbreak spread across the entire world in a matter of three to four months. This volume examines the first responses to the pandemic, the contexts of earlier epidemics and the epidemiological basics of infectious diseases. Further, it discusses patterns in the spread of the disease; the management and containment of infections at the personal, national and global level; effects on trade and commerce; the social and psychological impact on people; the disruption and postponement of international events; the role of various international organizations like the WHO in the search for solutions; and the race for a vaccine or a cure. Authored by a medical professional and an economist working on the frontlines, this book gives a nuanced, verified and fact-checked analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic and its global response. A one-stop resource on the COVID-19 outbreak, it is indispensable for every reader and a holistic work for scholars and researchers of medical sociology, public health, political economy, public policy and governance, sociology of health and medicine, and paramedical and medical practitioners. It will also be a great resource for policymakers, government departments and civil society organizations working in the area.

Malawi reported its first case of COVID-19 in April and declared a national emergency. Schools, bars and restaurants were closed, international flights suspended, and the economy faced considerable disruptions: quarterly growth projections from July were cut by more than 60% (Saldarriaga Noel et al. 2020). While still concerning, compared to other countries and other parts of the world, the spread of this disease in Malawi has been relatively modest with 5,951 confirmed cases and 184 COVID-19 linked deaths as of November 8, 2020. After accelerating rates of infection in June and July, the rates have decreased over the last two months.1 In response, there has been a partial return to normalcy, marked by easing COVID-19 restrictions and the reopening of schools at the beginning of September, even while the future trajectory of the disease remains unknown.

The threat of a global pandemic has long been known about, but COVID- 19's almost unstoppable spread took everyone by surprise. By July, however, a number of countries had started to bring the virus somewhat under control—lockdowns were being lifted and people were beginning life under the “new normal." The question now is, what next? Do we return to a carbon-based society or use this opportunity to create a greener economy? How do we prepare for a possible second wave and is track and trace the key to avoiding strict lockdowns? Are remote-based work and behind closed doors sporting events the new norm? And, maybe most importantly, how do we start the recovery for sectors devastated after a torrid 1H2020? This 19-page special reports contains seeks to answer these questions through a series of editorial pieces.

In the final days of 2019, a new and deadly virus was quietly spreading through the city of Wuhan, China. Within six months it would kill half a million people worldwide, infect a further 10 million, and change the way all of us live, work and play forever. Now, for the first time, the real story of the greatest global crisis of the age can be told. Reporters Dylan Howard and Dominic Utton, collaborating from New York and London—infection hotspots in what would become two of the worst-hit nations on Earth—have together mapped the rise, spread and impact of the virus . . . and uncovered some explosive revelations. COVID-19: The Greatest Cover-Up in History—From Wuhan to the White House delivers the unfettered truth about what is undoubtedly the biggest political scandal of our time. It shows in unprecedented detail how governments in China, the UK, and the US not only failed to protect their citizens from the threat of the disease, but actively conspired to put their own political and economic ideologies above the lives of ordinary people. From early attempts by Beijing to silence any reports of the new virus to the inability of the WHO to act decisively; from warnings received and ignored by President Trump to decisions taken by the UK government that directly led to the loss of tens of thousands of lives; from whispers of military experiments to outlandish 5G conspiracy theories, Howard and Utton separate fact from fiction, science from hysteria, and expose a trail of dead bodies, wilful mismanagement, incompetence, arrogance, deliberate cover-ups, and outrageous lies that raise serious questions about who is really responsible for the hundreds of thousands killed by COVID-19. Through vigorous investigations, dedicated reporting, and exclusive first-person sourcing, COVID-19 unearths a more complex understanding of the rise, spread, and consequences of the first six months of the pandemic than has yet been seen, and exposes shocking revelations about the roles and motivations of the American and British governments in the crisis. The true story of COVID-19 is not just that of a silent killer that suddenly invaded the world . . . it’s the scandal of a global tragedy that could have—and should have—been prevented. The real number of deaths and infections from the virus will never be known. The figures have not only been underreported in China, but by supposedly transparent governments in the West for reasons less connected with public safety and more to do with their own mendacity, incompetence, and corruption. Written with the urgency and tension of a thriller novel but grounded in rigorously factual reporting, COVID-19 is the essential read on the most horrifying scandal of our age.

These days, we are panicking at the raging of corona virus. At first glance, China's health authorities underestimated their danger. And so far, its destructive power is the most terrible among the diseases that humans have experienced in the last 100 years. At the place where I work, people are rushing to buy medical masks. And business people take advantage of this to increase the price of masks and handwash to 10-12 times normal. As a doctor, I understand why this situation occurs. This is because most people do not yet know the corona virus and how it is transmitted. So, I took the time to write a file about corona virus (Everything about coronavirus and how to protect yourself), and a guide on how to choose and use medical masks properly (Everything about face masks and Coronavirus). And now, I feel I need to continue to teach people how to wash their hands properly. Because of this, along with wearing a mask, are the two most important things to help prevent the spread of corona virus in the community. In this booklet, I will share the following 3 main content: 1. Why should I wash my hands during the coronavirus outbreak? The benefits that handwashing brings to each of us help prevent disease spread. 2. How to wash your hands properly according to the instructions of reputable health organizations. 3. Finally, I will share the type of hand sanitizer recommended by health professionals. I hope that my knowledge and colleagues from health organizations around the globe will help people take the initiative in preventing the spread of corona virus disease. And we will repel it soon. Sincerely thank you! Dr. Timothy Zahar [email protected]

To cure a case of COVID-19, we need a comprehensive definition of the COVID-19, and a complementary definition of cure covering all aspects and all cases. Neither exists today. COVID-19 is incurable. COVID-19 Defining Cured defines cure, cures, curing and cured as related to COVID-19, from the simplest asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, to multiple stages of disease leading to disabilities and additional disease that might be caused by COVID-19. Today, cured is not defined for COVID-19. Statistics for COVID-19 include counts of Cases, Recovered, and Deaths. There are no counts for cured. Because cured is not defined for COVID-19, it is not possible to count COVID-19 cures. It is also not possible to test or validate any COVID-19 cures. This is hardly a surprise. Cured is not defined scientifically nor medically for most diseases. Cured is defined in a testable fashion for an infectious disease that is cured by a medicine. No other type of disease has a definition of cured. Cured is not defined for any disease cured by natural healthiness, therefore "there is no cure for the common cold". Cured is not defined for any mental disorder. Cured cannot be defined for a mental disorder - due to an obscured technical issue. Cured is not defined for any chronic disease - and as a result all chronic diseases are considered incurable. Finally, cured is not defined for any non-infectious disease. Healthicine, the arts and sciences of health and healthiness, contains a theory of cure and provides a clear definition of cured for any (curable) element of illness as published in A Theory of Cure and The Elements of Cure. A severe case of COVID-19 consists of many elements of illness. As a result, a severe case of COVID-19 requires several cures, only one of which can be medically recognized. This book presents an analysis of the theory of cure, as it applies to the disease COVID-19. This is not about about curing COVID-19, it is about understanding cures, and COVID-19, to the point where we understand when a COVID-19 cure is present, or not.

"It is such a nice day today." Two women were chatting over tea. "I know. I'm so glad we sat outside today. I thought for sure it was going to rain." A waiter approached them, and took their orders. Once he left they got back to chatting. "I'm so excited for my vacation. It's going to be so much fun!" "Ooh where are you going?" “Italy! We’ve been planning for months.” The other woman perked up. “I have always wanted to go there! I’m sure you’re going to have a great time.” The women chatted some more, and had a nice lunch. Then they went their separate ways. One of them walked past a man who went into the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

The information in this package is intended to support prison administrators and staff. It has been developed to ensure the safety and security of staff, prisoners and the public in the efforts to prevent COVID-19 from entering the prison and mitigate the impact in case of an outbreak. Addressing COVID-19 requires critical preparedness and a prepared response, particularly within places of detention (prisons). Prison staff play a crucial role in contributing to the effort of preventing the spread of the disease, promoting safer prison environments, and responding to outbreaks in a timely and effective manner. All efforts must be taken to keep COVID-19 out of the prisons. Preventative measures will most likely result in significant disruptions to ordinary prison routines and require the administration to make difficult decisions that may restrict or limit prison operations and activities. Responding to a COVID-19 outbreak once the virus has spread in the prison is a significant challenge – particularly in overcrowded conditions. The package provides communication tools with clear and concise information and visuals.
