Development of Online Hybrid Testing: Theory and Applications to Structural Engineering provides comprehensive treatments of several topics pertinent to substructure online hybrid tests. Emphasis has been placed on explaining the three frameworks: the host-station framework, separated model framework and peer to peer framework These have been developed within the Internet environment and are particularly suitable for distributed hybrid testing. In order to help readers to understand the essence of online hybrid testing and further to build up their own systems, an engineering practice has been introduced at the end of this book with the source code appended. Development of Online Hybrid Testing: Theory and Applications to Structural Engineering is primarily written for readers with some background in structural dynamics, finite elements, and computer science. Material that has previously only appeared in journal articles has been consolidated and simplified which provides the reader with a perspective of the state-of-the-art. Presents basics and implementations of time integration algorithms for online hybrid tests, along with the applications for real engineering projects Includes current progress on the development of substructure online hybrid tests as a means of investigating the seismic behaviour of large-scale structures Provides source code for the example tests

Hybrid Simulation deals with a rapidly evolving technology combining computer simulation (typically finite element) and physical laboratory testing of two complementary substructures. It is a cost effective alternative to shaking table test, and allows for the improved understanding of complex coupled systems. Traditionally, numerical simulation an

Performance-based Earthquake Engineering has emerged before the turn of the century as the most important development in the field of Earthquake Engineering during the last three decades. It has since then started penetrating codes and standards on seismic assessment and retrofitting and making headway towards seismic design standards for new structures as well. The US have been a leader in Performance-based Earthquake Engineering, but also Europe is a major contributor. Two Workshops on Performance-based Earthquake Engineering, held in Bled (Slovenia) in 1997 and 2004 are considered as milestones. The ACES Workshop in Corfu (Greece) of July 2009 builds on them, attracting as contributors world-leaders in Performance-based Earthquake Engineering from North America, Europe and the Pacific rim (Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan, China). It covers the entire scope of Performance-based Earthquake Engineering: Ground motions for performance-based earthquake engineering; Methodologies for Performance-based seismic design and retrofitting; Implementation of Performance-based seismic design and retrofitting; and Advanced seismic testing for performance-based earthquake engineering. Audience: This volume will be of interest to scientists and advanced practitioners in structural earthquake engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, and experimental dynamics.

The articles in this book describe new developments in the area of structural testing, particularly those based upon the principle of fusing numerical and experimental methods such as real-time dynamic substructuring and hardware-in-the loop testing. In addition to the hybrid methods, chapters on the latest develoments in more established techniques, such as shaking table testing, provide a completely up-to-date survey of structural testing methods. The book is characterized by a multidisciplinary nature of the work that integrates cutting-edge research from the fields of non-linear dynamics, automatic control, numerical analysis, system modelling and mechatronics.

Based on a philosophy of active learning, this innovative text uses unfolding case studies as a compelling vehicle for learning fundamental nursing content. Unlike traditional vignettes, these case studies evolve over time as real-life situations, better enabling students to develop the skills they need to problem solve, actively engage, and use critical thinking techniques in new situations. The unfolding case study method also assists in the development of skills that are important for nursing students about to embark on the NCLEX-RN. The text incorporates all types of NCLEX-style questions into the unfolding case studies to facilitate exam preparation. This method offers a unique study opportunity that integrates all fundamental concepts and skills application with practice and professional role responsibilities. The patient care content areas that are needed for NCLEX-RN success--safe and effective care, health promotion, physiological and psychological integrity--are interwoven into an engaging format. References at the end of each chapter provide guidance for additional study as needed. Electronic and web resources provide quick access to valuable web-delivered information that will be useful in a clinical setting. eBook versions of this text will take the reader directly to the web resource. Key Features: Integrates core nursing concepts and content into unfolding case studies Provides engaging test review preparation for course success and NCLEX-RN test success Offers students a refreshing new study option and relief from endless Q&A format offered by other content review books Develops critical thinking skills to help students "think like a nurse" Incorporates all types of NCLEX-style questions into unfolding case studies

Modelling is an important tool for understanding the complexity of forest ecosystems and the variety of interactions of ecosystem components, processes and values. This book describes the hybrid approach to modelling forest ecosystems and their possible response to natural and management-induced disturbance. The book describes the FORECAST family of ecosystem management models at three different spatial scales (tree, stand and landscape), and compares them with alternative models at these three spatial scales. The book will help forest managers to understand what to expect from ecosystem-based forest models; serve as a tool for use in teaching about sustainability, scenario analysis and value trade-offs in natural resources management; and assist policy makers, managers and researches working in assessment of sustainable forest management and ecosystem management. Several real-life examples of using the FORECAST family of models in forest management and other applications are presented from countries including Canada, China, Spain and the USA, to illustrate the concepts described in the text. The book also demonstrates how these models can be extended for scenario and value trade-off analysis through visualization and educational or management games.
