At twenty-two, Julie Barton collapsed on her kitchen floor in Manhattan. She was one year out of college and severely depressed. Summoned by Julie's incoherent phone call, her mother raced from Ohio to New York and took her home. Psychiatrists, therapists and family tried to intervene, but nothing reached her until the day she decided to do one hopeful thing: adopt a Golden Retriever puppy she named Bunker. Dog Medicine captures in beautiful, elegiac language the anguish of depression, the slow path to recovery, and the astonishing way animals can heal even the most broken hearts and minds.

As far back as colonial times, Native individuals and communities have fought alongside European and American soldiers against common enemies. Medicine Bags and Dog Tags is the story of these Native men and women whose military service has defended ancient homelands, perpetuated longstanding warrior traditions, and promoted tribal survival and sovereignty. Drawing on a rich array of archival records and oral traditions, Al Carroll offers the most complete account of Native veterans to date and is the first to take an international approach, drawing comparisons with Native veteran traditions in Canada and Mexico. He debunks the “natural warrior” stereotype as well as the popular assumption that Natives join the military as a refuge against extreme poverty and as a form of assimilation. The reasons for enlistment, he argues, though varied and complex, are invariably connected to the relative strengths of tribal warrior traditions within communities. Carroll provides a fascinating look at how the culture and training of the American military influenced the makeup and tactics of the American Indian Movement in the 1960s and 1970s and how, in turn, Natives have influenced U.S. military tactics, symbolism, and basic training.

Prior to publication of the first edition of Clinical Medicine of the Dog and Cat, no other comprehensive small animal veterinary medicine book existed with a comparable amount of relevant illustrated material. This new third edition continues and expands on the revolutionary approach of the previous two editions, now including more than 1,850 highly valuable clinical colour photographs, diagrams, and tables. The third edition of this book has been completely revised and updated. The book is now divided into five color-coded sections – General Approach, Disease of Specific Organ Systems, Multisystemic Disorders, Elements of Therapy and Case Studies. As with the first and second editions of this book the overriding principle of succinct, yet comprehensive text presented in a clear format with an abundance of good quality images remains. Section I: General Approach is completely new and covers medical history and client communication, and common clinical problems. Section II: Specific Organ Systems is organized by body system with chapters structured in a systematic manner that include the definition for each disorder, its causes, clinical features, differential diagnoses, diagnostic methodology, treatment and prognosis, providing readers with easy access to important clinical information. New to this section are chapters covering diseases of the oral cavity and teeth, approach to thoracic radiographs, approach to abdominal radiographs, and disorders of hemostasis. Section III: Multisystemic Disorders covers revised and updated chapters including clinical toxicology, infectious diseases, and immunologic disorders. Section IV: Elements of Therapy covers therapies such as fluid therapy, pain management, nutrition of the critically ill dog and cat and a new chapter on management of the obese dog or cat. Section V: Case Studies includes over 25 case studies that enable the reader to relate the knowledge gained in the book to clinical cases seen in practice. Written by board-certified experts with several case contributions by clinicians in advanced phases of resident training, topics were carefully selected to make this a valuable resource to the general practitioner and also to small animal interns and veterinary students.

New York Times bestselling author Maria Goodavage takes us on a thrilling, delightful, globe-trotting journey to discover the heartwarming and fascinating new world of doctor dogs. In this groundbreaking book, Goodavage brings us behind the scenes of cutting-edge science at top research centers, and into the lives of people whose well-being depends on their devoted, highly skilled personal MDs (medical dogs). With her signature wit and passion, Goodavage explores how doctor dogs are becoming our happy allies in the fight against dozens of physical and mental conditions. We meet dogs who detect cancer and Parkinson’s disease, and dogs who alert people to seizures and diabetic lows or highs and other life-threatening physical ailments. Goodavage reveals the revolutionary ways dogs are helping those with autism, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder. And she introduces us to intrepid canines who are protecting us from antibiotic-resistant bugs, and to dogs who may one day help keep us safe from epidemic catastrophe. Their paycheck for their lifesaving work? Heartfelt praise and a tasty treat or favorite toy. The emotional element in Doctor Dogs delivers as powerfully as the science. You don’t have to be a dog lover to care deeply about what these dogs are doing and what we are learning from them—although if you’re not a dog lover, you probably will be by the end of the book.
