From running with the infamous Calton Tongs to running Calton Athletic, David Bryce's life story is a remarkable account of crime, violence, alcoholism and drug addiction in Glasgow's gangland. A respected 'hard man', Bryce worked his way through most of HM's prisons in Scotland before an epiphany in 1977 made him realise that he was a hopeless alcoholic who needed help. A five-year battle followed, during which he sank into the abyss of heroin addiction before finally getting clean. In 1985, in an effort to help others who were struggling against substance abuse, Bryce set up Calton Athletic, a football team and social group made up solely of recovering drug addicts. Reformed gangster Jimmy Boyle was one of the first to have faith in Bryce and Calton Athletic, but the club eventually won widespread respect. Gordon Brown, then a young MP, was so impressed that he wrote an article for The Observer which led to a TV film starring Lenny Henry and Robbie Coltrane. In the '90s, Ewan McGregor, Irvine Welsh and the Trainspotting crew sought Bryce's advice and friendship during the making of the internationally acclaimed cult film, while Robbie Williams begged to switch nationality and play for Calton Atheltic in an 'England v. Scotland' celebrity charity match. Bryce's uncompromising belief that the only way to come off drugs is to go cold turkey and stay completely clean saw him clash with government agencies over the 'harm-reduction' policy of recent years. The club's statutory funding was withdrawn in 1998, but today Calton Athletic are still providing an invaluable lifeline while the 'official' drugs policy has become increasingly discredited. Alive and Kicking is an inspirational tale of survival and success against the odds.

Jimmy Jenner has been working as a private detective since a terrorist bomb took both his leg and his job on London's police force. He's been hired to work on a straightforward divorce case, but the stakes are quickly raised. First someone tries to murder a man who resembles Jenner, then the subject of his divorce investigation is found dead in Epping Forest. Jenner soon realizes he's the catalyst in these events. And so he begins to question his own past, particularly the accidental death of his brother Joe, 30 years earlier. Joe was a minor criminal, a peripheral member of the circle of South London gangster, Tommy Slaughter. Was Joe's death what it seemed at the time? The answer may explain the violence now closing in on Jimmy Jenner.

Students taking Elder Law or Health Law might find this book helpful to get a quick introduction to topics you don't cover in your course or as a second opinion for those you do. As a savvy law professor, even if you don't teach those courses, particularily if you don't teach those courses, you get tough questions from friends and relatives — “Should I have a living trust? What's a health care power of attorney? What's a disgruntled heir?” Here's help for dire times. Written by a law professor with the practical insights of an elder law lawyer, it covers everything from retirement (finances, housing, Medicare) to advance directives, elder abuse to nursing homes, scams, bill collectors, age discrimination, to disability in the family and hospice. It even covers sex, driving, and what it feels like growing old, having everyone start calling you “dear” and giving you, without even asking, those dreaded discounts. This book is a rewrite of Alive and Kicking: Legal Advice for Boomers by Kenney F. Hegland and Robert B. Fleming.

The goal of this work is to describe the changes occurring in the Pitjantjatjara speech of teenagers in Areyonga, a Central Australian community, from both a grammatical and a sociolinguistic point of view. The study is based on data collected in 1994 and 1995. At the time the data was being collected, the Areyonga community had about 200 inhabitants, more than half of them under 25 years of age. A key question of this work is the extent to which Areyonga Teenage Pitjantjatjara is being influenced by contact with English. In order to identify changes in Areyonga Teenage Pitjantjatjara, contemporary speech was compared with several independent descriptions of Traditional Pitjantjatjara (and similar neighbouring dialects). Personal observations of the author and discussions with older Pitjantjatjara people at Areyonga help to round out the picture obtained. The Areyonga population is predominantly young. Most of the older people have left the settlement to return to their community of origin. As a result, many traditional ways of living have not been transmitted fully to the following generation. However there is an undeniable striving to reintegrate traditions into the community and the teaching of the children. Consequently, there is a constant effort to educate children in their first language. What then is the state of Areyonga Teenage Pitjantjatjara? This book aims to answer this question.
