Human Resource Management (HRM) is fundamentally shaped by institutional and cultural factors, such as the different political environments and social philosophies of particular countries and regions. By examining the various organizational aspects of business life and systems of people management in Asia, the study of HRM across the continent can, therefore, give us a greater understanding of Asian societies, as well as the contemporary world of work more generally. This handbook provides an up-to-date and intellectually engaging overview of HRM in the Asian context. Distinctive in its comprehensive coverage of traditional as well as emerging topics of HRM, it analyzes important themes, such as the regulatory framework for work and employment, religiosity, family business, and gender. Using a comparative approach, it also effectively highlights the unique features of each country’s attitudes towards HRM. Covering a range of themes and case studies, sections include: • Institutional and cultural contexts, • Labour regulation and industrial relations, • Thematic and functional HRM, • HRM in selected Asian countries, such as China, Japan, Vietnam, India, and Singapore. Written in a highly accessible style, this book will be useful to students and scholars of Human Resource Management, Asian Business, Economics, and Sociology.

This volume explores variations, continuities, and changes in the institutional foundations of East Asian capitalism since the 1980s, as reflected in business systems, financial structures, and labour markets. These three institutional dimensions have constituted the main underpinnings of post-war capitalist development in East Asia. While the volume encompasses a range of different cases, specific issues and diverse methodologies, they are all structured aroundthe two dominant themes-the continuities and changes in the institutional underpinnings of capitalist development and the main driving forces behind them. These two themes run through the various parts of the volume and facilitate an integrated analysis of how changing institutional practices inbusiness, financial, and labour systems interact and affect the evolution of capitalist political economies in the region.

In Reforming Asian Labor Systems, Frederic C. Deyo examines the implications of post-1980s market-oriented economic reform for labor systems in China, South Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand. Adopting a critical institutionalist perspective, he explores the impact of elite economic interests and strategies, labor politics, institutional path dependencies, and changing economic circumstances on regimes of labor and social regulation in these four countries. Of particular importance are reform-driven socioeconomic and political tensions that, especially following the regional financial crisis of the late 1990s, have encouraged increased efforts to integrate social and developmental agendas with those of market reform. Through his analysis of the social economy of East and Southeast Asia, Deyo suggests that several Asian countries may now be positioned to repeat what they achieved in earlier decades: a prominent role in defining new international models of development and market reform that adapt to the pressures and constraints of the evolving world economy.

Wages are a major component of decent work, yet there is a serious knowledge gap in this increasingly important area. This volume, the first in a new series focusing on wage developments, reviews major trends in the level and distribution of wages around the world since 1995. It considers the effects of economic growth and globalization on wage trends, looking closely at the role of minimum wages and collective bargaining. It also suggests ways to improve wage levels and to enable more equal distribution. Part One summarizes the main trends in average wages and distribution of wages, providing a statistical analysis of the links between wages and productivity, along with wage forecasts for 2008 and 2009. Part Two examines the relationship between minimum wage policies and collective bargaining, highlighting the effects of institutions on wage outcomes and the importance of coherent policy articulation. Part Three concludes with concrete policy recommendations and identifies key issues for further research. The book includes full technical and statistical annexes.

This volume reviews the global and regional wage trends during the economic and financial crisis of 2008-09. Part I highlights the slowdown in the growth of monthly average wages as well as some short-term fluctuations in the wage share. These changes happened against a backdrop of wage moderation in the years before the crisis and a long-term trend of rising wage inequality since the mid-1990s. Part II discusses the role of wage policies in times of crisis and recovery. Collective bargaining and minimum wages can help achieve a balanced and equitable recovery by ensuring that working families share in the fruits of future economic growth. At the same time, preventing the purchasing power of low-paid workers from falling can contribute to a faster recovery by sustaining aggregate demand. Part III highlights issues that are critical for improving wage policies. Global Wage Report 2010/11 demonstrates that policy strategies and design are crucial to ensuring that low-paid workers benefit from union representation and minimum wages, and it argues that wage policies must be complemented with carefully crafted in-work benefits and other income transfers.
