Looking at the development of facade technology, after 60 years of curtain wall systems, 30 years of element-facade systems and ten years of experience with the integration of environmental services in double facades, it is clear that the peak of optimization has been reached. No further technical developments can be expected by continuing to apply extra layers for each additional technical function. By understanding facades (or envelopes) as part of an integral building, we can see that creating the future envelope has to be done on a 'network' basis: employing systems and methods of thinking that provide the possibility to develop different aspects simultaneously, and to combine them as required. The envelope has to be seen as a functional part of the entire building, serving a part of the demand by providing the necessary technologies and qualities. In this regard, we must withdraw from material and structure-orientated thinking and construction, instead developing the envelope as a hybrid system. Materials, technologies and production processes have to be integrated in the summation and combined into an all-encompassing result. "Facades" comprises various themes covering strategic, material and technological developments. Aspects such as function integration, networking of elements, new structures and materials as well as the addition of functions to existing structures are investigated and explained in 85 examples.

Imagine Otherwise is an incisive critique of the field of Asian American studies. Recognizing that the rubric "Asian American" elides crucial differences, Kandice Chuh argues for reframing Asian American studies as a study defined not by its subjects and objects, but by its critique. Toward that end, she urges the foregrounding of the constructedness of "Asian American" formations and shows how this understanding of the field provides the basis for continuing to use the term "Asian American" in light of—and in spite of—contemporary critiques about its limitations. Drawing on the insights of poststructuralist theory, postcolonial studies, and investigations of transnationalism, Imagine Otherwise conceives of Asian American literature and U.S. legal discourse as theoretical texts to be examined for the normative claims about race, gender, and sexuality that they put forth. Reading government and legal documents, novels including Carlos Bulosan's America Is in the Heart, John Okada's No-No Boy, Chang-rae Lee's A Gesture Life, Ronyoung Kim's Clay Walls, and Lois Ann Yamanaka's Blu's Hanging, and the short stories "Immigration Blues" by Bienvenido Santos and "High-Heeled Shoes" by Hisaye Yamamoto, Chuh works through Filipino American and Korean American identity formation and Japanese American internment during World War II as she negotiates the complex and sometimes tense differences that constitute 'Asian America' and Asian American studies.

This book focuses on the lives of five unique, nationally known sociologists who are among the first African American women to receive doctorate degrees in this discipline. The histories of Jacquelyne Johnson Jackson, LaFrancis Rodgers-Rose, Joyce A. Ladner, Doris Wilkinson, and Delores P. Aldridge are accompanied by personal sociologies and detailed descriptions of unique areas of research they have used for social change. In each case, the reader will be able to see the intellectual and academic evolution of the sociologists as they built careers in their discipline. Further, the reader will be able to understand how these sociologists extended the very definition of the sociological enterprise by their movements between academic sociology and non-academic organizations, various social movements, and non-academic employment. Interviews with and analyses of the sociologists' published research are featured alongside their biographical information.
