Laser Sintering (LS) with plastics is one of the most promising additive manufacturing technologies: it is currently regarded as the process most likely in the future to permanently cross the border between prototyping and the production of functional parts. This step is challenging because it means that the technology must meet certain requirements that are also valid for traditional and established production processes. Only by succeeding at this step can a wide industry acceptance of LS be expected in the future. In this context, this book covers all levels of the LS process chain, including: - Current state of the machine technology - Essential process steps, both before and during sintering - Specific demands of the materials, powder production methods, and evaluation of powder properties - Mechanical properties and density of the parts produced by LS Examples of LS-produced parts are given, including those with special design features, to illustrate the characteristics and also the limitations of the LS method. In particular, the distinct advantages of LS parts over parts produced with other plastics processing methods (e.g., injection molding) are discussed.

Depolymerizable polymers have been used in a variety of applications including as signalamplification reagents for sensors, responsive capsules, shape-changing plastics, andautonomous analyte-responsive pumps. This Thesis demonstrates the use of depolymerizablepolymers for use as point-of-care (POC) sensors, as well as shape-changing materials. POCassays are used for detecting and quantifying analytes in environments that lack laboratoryinfrastructure. Quantitative POC assays are the most challenging to perform. They requiremeasurements of both the duration of the assay and the output signal, and generally require botha handheld reader and a separate external timer. The ideal POC assay, as outlined by the WorldHealth Organization, should be inexpensive, easy to use, and be equipment free. This Thesisseeks to address these challenges by creating quantitative POC assays that operate without usinginstruments or electronic readers. This Thesis describes the development of a proof-of-conceptstrategy that is based on controlling the flow of sample through paper in a way that depends bothon the presence and concentration of a specific analyte. These assays use paper microfluidicdevices and are able to quantify the levels of an analyte by measuring the time required for colorto appear in a region on the device. The assays are based on selective changes in wettingproperties of paper that has been modified with specific reagents that convert from hydrophobicto hydrophilic in response to a specific analyte.The application of depolymerizable polymers as shape-changing is also described in this Thesis.Depolymerizable polymers are used with an additive manufacturing, selective laser sintering(SLS), to form responsive 3-D objects. These objects can selectively respond to a variety ofsignals, resulting in macroscopic changes to the shape and properties of the plastic object.
