Motor neuron disease (MND), also commonly known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder of the motor system in adults, characterized by the loss of motor neurons in the cortex, brain stem and spinal cord. This book presents current research from across the globe in the study of the causes, classification and treatments of MND, including membrane trafficking defects as determinants of motor neuron susceptibility and degeneration in ALS; motorneuron specific calcium dysregulation and perturbed cellular calcium homeostasis in ALS; stem cells and their application in ALS treatment; excitotoxicity and selective motor neuron degeneration and therapeutic invervention and assistive technology treatments. Our understanding of the pathology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a continuously changing field. New hypotheses are generated with each new discovery; they are abandoned to be reanalyzed after some time under the light of new observations. This book present a series of reviews from experts in different aspects of the disease focus on these hypotheses. There are also a few review chapters providing clear examples of these new observations that make the field to reanalyze previous conclusions.

A practical, protocol-oriented guide to the practice of neurology in the hospital setting A Doody's Core Title for 2017! Hospital neurology is one of the fastest growing subspecialties within neurology. Running an efficient and effective neurohospitalist line is important to the financial success of hospitals and the physicians employed there. Many neurology patients also have internal medicine problems, and often it is a general hospitalist without neurology training who treat these patients. These physicians sorely need more information on neurology. Conversely, neurologists caring for these patients have only had one year of internal medicine training and require more guidance on medical problems. Given these realities, there is a need for a resource on hospital neurology. With The Hospital Neurology Book, Drs. Salardini and Biller have created a practical, concise, and useful work that guides both neurologists and internists in the areas in which their training is currently not sufficient for hospital practice. The Hospital Neurology Book features a highly readable format, providing information physicians can act upon, including recipes and protocols for patient care and question-based chapter headings that lead physicians to the exact issue they are dealing with in the moment. Each chapter (or chapter section as appropriate) opens with a case study, setting the stage in a highly practical manner, and ends with high yield summary points useful for consolidating learning.

The motor neuron diseases (or motor neuron diseases) (MND) are a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing. Neurological examination presents specific signs associated with upper and lower motor neuron degeneration. Signs of upper motor neuron damage include spasticity, brisk reflexes and the Babinski sign. Signs of lower motor neuron damage include weakness and muscle atrophy. Every muscle group in the body requires both upper and lower motor neurons to function. It is a common misconception that "upper" motor neurons control the arms, while "lower" motor neurons control the legs. The signs described above can occur in any muscle group, including the arms, legs, torso, and bulbar region. Symptoms usually present between the ages of 50-70, and include progressive weakness, muscle wasting, and muscle fasciculations; spasticity or stiffness in the arms and legs; and overactive tendon reflexes. Patients may present with symptoms as diverse as a dragging foot, unilateral muscle wasting in the hands, or slurred speech. This new book presents the latest research from around the globe.

Written by two leading experts in the field, Acupuncture in Neurological Conditions aims to improve patient care by combining Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concepts of treatment. The language of TCM is uniquely combined with that of evidence-based clinical reasoning to provide an approach relevant to both acupuncture and physiotherapy clinical practice. All major types of neurological conditions encountered in clinical practical are examined. Chinese medical patterns relevant to the application of acupuncture are described, as well as key patterns of dysfunction based on a Western medical perspective. The place of acupuncture within the overall management of different neurological conditions is also discussed. Clinical reasoning options from both TCM and Western medical perspectives are provided, and illustrated by real cases from clinical practice forming a sound platform for true integrated medicine. Fully evidence-based Provides clinical reasoning options from TCM and Western medical perspectives Illustrates clinical reasoning with real cases from clinical practice Provides detailed examination of all major types of neurological conditions encountered in clinical practice.
