This volume provides a complete guide to advancements made in the understanding of Parkinson's disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. From information on early research conducted in the 1960's, to modern clinical views of these diseases, this handbook will give clinicians and neuroscientists a state-of-the-art reference that presents critical appraisals on recent developments in the study of these disorders. As the world population in developed countries ages, these observations are particularly relevant. Dramatic data on the genetic causes of dominant and recessive forms of hereditary Parkinson's disease are presented, as well as new knowledge on the differences in the intricate circuitry of basal ganglia in healthy individuals and those afflicted with Parkinson's. Clinicians will find this to be a great platform on which to base ongoing investigative approaches and research. * A complete guide to the advances made in the field of neurogenerative disorders, including Parkinson's * A comprehensive accounting of the parkinsonian disorders, including pharmacological advances, patient management techniques, and therapeutic strategies * Critical appraisals of recent developments in the field that further clinical research and foster new investigative approaches

nd This book stems from the 2 Parkinson's Disease Symposium on "Neurotoxic Factors in Parkinsons disease and related disorders", held on August 6-7,1999 at the University ofUlm Medical School in Ulm at the Danube, Germany. The symposium wasalso asatellite ofthejointmeetingofthe InternationalSocietyfor Neurochemistry (ISN) and the European Society for Neurochemistry (ESN) that followed immediately afterwards in Berlin. The specific topic, neurotoxic factors in Parkinson's disease (PD), was chosen in light of accumulating neurobiological and epidemiological evidence indicating that the causes of this second most common neurodegenerative disorder, and possibly of related conditions such as multiple systems atrophy, in some manner involve environ mental (xenobiotic) and even endogenous toxic agents. This volume brings together much of that neurobiological evidence; and in epidemiology, several recent major studies ofPD - for example, a study of20,000 twins published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1999 - conclude that environmental and life style than genetics, appear to be critical in the idiopathic disease. However, factors, rather the precise roles of neurotoxic factors in the pathogenesis of PD and related basal ganglia disorders remain uncertain, despite the cascade of research resulting from the discovery of the prototype MPTP in the early 1980's, and frankly, we have been surprised by the paucity of concentrated attention on specific environmental agents other than MPTP.

This work focuses on corticobasal degeneration (CBD), and offers assistance in diagnosing this disease. The book reviews knowledge of the pathology of CBD and examines its clinical manifestations, including apraxia, Parkinsonism, dystonia, myoclonus, alien limb syndrome, aphasia, eye movement disorders, and dementia. Noted experts define criteria for diagnosing CBD and differentiating CBD from other movement disorders or demential disorders, including Parkinson's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, Alzheimer's disease, and Pick's disease. Consideration is given to diagnostic controversies, such as the relationship of CBD to Pick's disease. A chapter on therapy is also included.

Following a long period of comparative neglect, Alzheimer’s disease has come to be a major focus of scientific research, and in recent years considerable progress has been made towards understanding the basic molecular mechanisms of the disease and toward developing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Here, the latest information on Alzheimer’s disease is presented, including topics such as the mechanisms of degeneration of neurons with neurofibrillary tangles, the formation of brain amyloid in Alzheimer’s disease, risk factors, diagnosis and pharmacological approaches. The chapters are of a high standard, reflecting the fact that the authors are internationally renowned in their own specialist field and the book will have a wide appeal to psychopharmacologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, neurobiologists and neurochemists who seek a broad overview of the present thinking in the field.
