"If you have this book in your hands, we guess you are interested in database management systems in general and more precisely those handling Resource Description Framework (RDF) as a data representation model. We believe it is the right time to study such systems because they are getting more and more attention in industry with communities of Web developers and information technology (IT) experts who are designing innovative applications, in universities and engineering schools with introductory and advanced courses, and in both academia and industry research to design and implement novel approaches to manage large RDF data sets. We can identify several reasons that are motivating this enthusiasm"--

Linked Data Management presents techniques for querying and managing Linked Data that is available on today’s Web. The book shows how the abundance of Linked Data can serve as fertile ground for research and commercial applications. The text focuses on aspects of managing large-scale collections of Linked Data. It offers a detailed introduction to Linked Data and related standards, including the main principles distinguishing Linked Data from standard database technology. Chapters also describe how to generate links between datasets and explain the overall architecture of data integration systems based on Linked Data. A large part of the text is devoted to query processing in different setups. After presenting methods to publish relational data as Linked Data and efficient centralized processing, the book explores lookup-based, distributed, and parallel solutions. It then addresses advanced topics, such as reasoning, and discusses work related to read-write Linked Data for system interoperation. Despite the publication of many papers since Tim Berners-Lee developed the Linked Data principles in 2006, the field lacks a comprehensive, unified overview of the state of the art. Suitable for both researchers and practitioners, this book provides a thorough, consolidated account of the new data publishing and data integration paradigm. While the book covers query processing extensively, the Linked Data abstraction furnishes more than a mechanism for collecting, integrating, and querying data from the open Web—the Linked Data technology stack also allows for controlled, sophisticated applications deployed in an enterprise environment.

ThisvolumeconstitutestheproceedingsoftheSixthInternationalConferenceon Flexible Query Answering Systems, FQAS 2004, held in Lyon, France, on June 24–26, 2004. FQAS is the premier conference for researchers and practitioners concerned with the vital task of providing easy, ?exible, and intuitive access to information for every type of need. This multidisciplinary conference draws on several research areas, including databases, information retrieval, knowledge representation, soft computing, multimedia, and human-computer interaction. With FQAS 2004, the FQAS conference series celebrated its tenth anniversary as it has been held every two years since 1994. The overall theme of the FQAS conferences is innovative query systems aimed at providing easy, ?exible, and intuitive access to information. Such systems are intended to facilitate retrieval from information repositories such as databases, libraries, and the Web. These repositories are typically equipped with standard query systems that are often inadequate for users. The focus of FQAS is the development of query systems that are more expressive, informative, cooperative, productive, and intuitive to use.

WISE 2008 was held in Auckland, New Zealand, during September 1-3, at The Auckland University ofTechnology City Campus Conference Centre. The aim of this conferencewasto providean internationalforum for researchers, professi- als, and industrial practitioners to share their knowledge in the rapidly growing area of Web technologies, methodologies, and applications. Previous WISE c- ferences wereheld in Hong Kong, China (2000), Kyoto, Japan (2001), Singapore (2002), Rome, Italy (2003), Brisbane, Australia (2004), New York, USA (2005), Wuhan, China (2006) and Nancy, France (2007). The call for papers created considerable interest. Around 110 paper s- missions were received and the international Program Committee selected 31 papers out of the 110 submissions (an acceptance rate of 28. 2%). Of these, 17 papers were chosen for standard presentation and the remaining 14 papers for short presentation. The authors of the accepted papers range across 13 co- tries: Australia, China, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and the USA. The technical track of the WISE 2008 program o?ered nine paper presentation sessions. The selected - pers covered a wide and important variety of issues in Web information systems engineering such as querying; search; ranking; trust; peer-to-peer networks; - formation ?ltering; information integration; agents and mining. A few selected papers from WISE 2008 will be published in a special issue of the World Wide Web Journal, bySpringer. Inaddition, a $1000prizewasawardedto the authors ofthepaperselectedforthe"YahikoKambayashiBestPaperAward. This book places a strong emphasis on good design practice, allowing readers to master design methodology in an accessible, step-by-step fashion. In this book, database design methodology is explicitly divided into three phases: conceptual, logical, and physical. Each phase is described in a separate chapter with an example of the methodology working in practice. Extensive treatment of the Web as an emerging platform for database applications is covered alongside many code samples for accessing databases from the Web including JDBC, SQLJ, ASP, ISP, and Oracle's PSP. A thorough update of later chapters covering object-oriented databases, Web databases, XML, data warehousing, data mining is included in this new edition. A clear introduction to design implementation and management issues, as well as an extensive treatment of database languages and standards, make this book an indispensable, complete reference for database professionals.

As the Web continues to grow, increasing amounts of data are being made available for human and machine consumption. This emerging Semantic Web is rapidly entering the mainstream and, as a result, a variety of new solutions for searching, aggregating and the intelligent delivery of information are being produced, bothinresearchandcommercialsettings.Severalnewchallengesarise from this context, both from a technical and human–computer interaction p- spective – e.g., as issues to do with the scalability andusability of Semantic Web solutions become particularly important. The International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) is the major inter- tional forum where the latest research results and technical innovations on all aspects of the Semantic Web are presented. ISWC brings together researchers, practitioners, and users from the areas of arti?cial intelligence, databases, social networks, distributedcomputing,Webengineering, informationsystems, natural language processing, soft computing, and human–computer interaction to d- cuss the major challenges and proposed solutions, success stories and failures, as well the visions that can advance the ?eld.
