From a comparative perspective, human life histories are unique and raising offspring is unusually costly: humans have relatively short birth intervals compared to other apes, childhood is long, mothers care simultaneously for many dependent children (other apes raise one offspring at a time), infant mortality is high in natural fertility/mortality populations, and human females have a long post-reproductive lifespan. These features conspire to make child raising very burdensome. Mothers frequently defray these costs with paternal help (not usual in other ape species), although this contribution is not always enough. Grandmothers, elder siblings, paid allocarers, or society as a whole, help to defray the costs of childcare, both in our evolutionary past and now. Studying offspring care in a various human societies, and other mammalian species, a wide range of specialists such as anthropologists, psychologists, animal behaviorists, evolutionary ecologists, economists and sociologists, have contributed to this volume, offering new insights into and a better understanding of one of the key areas of human society.

Warren Botts is a disillusioned Ph.D., taking a break from his lab to teach middle-school science. Gentle, soft-spoken, and lonely, he innocently befriends Amanda, one of his students. But one morning, Amanda is found dead in his backyard, and Warren, shocked, flees the scene. As the small community slowly turns against him, an anonymous narrator, a person of extreme intelligence and emotional detachment, offers insight into events past and present. As the tension builds, we gain an intimate understanding of the power of secrets, illusions, and memories. Nicole Lundrigan uses her prodigious talent to deliciously creepy effect, producing a finely crafted page-turner and a chilling look into the mind of a psychopath.

From the author of Good Seats Still Available comes Substitute Thoughts, Kelly Hay's second collection of published poetry. This second compilation is seemingly an about-face from the first, delving into subject matter the reader merely glimpsed before. Good Seats was, for the most part, an encouraging exercise in hope and belief, purpose and love. But Substitute Thoughts takes the reader on a different journey, exploring the darker side of the human mystery, our depressions, our addictions, our heartache. It has been said "painting is silent poetry, and poetry painting that speaks " [Simondes]. In this collection, Hay paints an intimate portrait of life in the darkest shades of midnight from whence humanity's most discouraging nightmares come alive.

Teaching is a dedicated job for people who are interested in molding young lives. But when one is both black and a substitute teacher with an accent, the job becomes very challenging. Teaching is a white color and middle class job. Alpha being black with an accent had a real trip to hell and back because he had a daily shower of humiliations torturous and sometimes disrespectful and overt racist instances. His determination was stretched to the limits of physical and mental endurance in the public school where racism, ethnic cleansing, hatred for people of color and accent exerted their weight like lead. The result was frustration, demotivation and the feeling of hopelessness. This novel is a true story of classroom encounter, but the names, places and scenes are fictitoius. Alpha stayed at the end of the line with all his qualifications and experience while those who came after him, less qualified and experience moved on. But the organization and maintenance of the system was like a sinking old flag ship.
