Applications, Processes, and Controls is the second volume in the Handbook for Critical Cleaning, Second Edition. Should you clean your product during manufacturing? If so, when and how? Cleaning is essential for proper performance, optimal quality, and increased sales. Inadequate cleaning of product elements can lead to catastrophic failure of the entire system and serious hazards to individuals and the general public. Gain a competitive edge with proven cleaning and contamination-control strategies A decade after the bestselling original, the Handbook for Critical Cleaning, Second Edition helps manufacturers meet today’s challenges, providing practical information and perspective about cleaning chemistries, equipment, processes, and applications. With 90% new or revised chapters plus supplementary online material, the handbook has grown into two comprehensive volumes: Cleaning Agents and Systems, and Applications, Processes, and Controls. Helping manufacturers become more efficient and productive, these books: Show how to increase profitability and meet both existing and expected product demand Clarify the sea of print and Internet information about cleaning chemistries and techniques Address challenges of performance, miniaturization, and cost, as well as regulatory and supply chain pressures Offer clearly written guidance from the viewpoints of more than 70 leading industry contributors in technical, management, academic, and regulatory disciplines Overview chapters by the editors, industry icons Barbara and Ed Kanegsberg, meld the different viewpoints and compile and critique the options. The result is a complete, cohesive, balanced perspective that helps manufacturers better select, implement, and maintain a quality, value-added cleaning process. The second volume, Handbook for Critical Cleaning: Applications, Processes, and Controls, addresses how to implement, validate, monitor, and maintain a critical cleaning process. Topics include cleanrooms, materials compatibility, worker safety, sustainability, and environmental constraints. The book shows readers how to draw from diverse disciplines—including aerospace, art conservation, electronics, food, life sciences, military, optics, and semiconductors—to achieve superior productivity.

Design and Selection of Performance Surfactants is the resource for clear, informative, in-depth reviews of the most topical areas of surfactant science and technology. This is the second volume in an annual series already recognized as an essential resource for major developments in the field. Topics in this volume include spontaneous polymerization in organized micellar media, the catalytic and kinetic effects in ethoxylation processes, narrow and secondary alcohol ethoxylates, plus the latest advances in flurosurfactants and carbohydrate-derived surfactants. Further readings cover the cutting-edge, microbial and enzymatic production of biosurfactants advances in the computer modeling of surfactants. International contributors detail the latest applications in oil drilling, floor polishes, and food emulsification. Science and industry are constantly refining research and finding new applications for surface chemical technology. Reading Design and Selection of Performance Surfactants is the most efficient and accessible way for chemists, researchers, and manufacturers to stay abreast of the latest developments.

Because they are biodegradable and work well in low energy separations, surfactants are an active area of interest in separations science. This book covers surfactant-based separations for the chemical and biochemical process industries and analytical chemistry. It includes discussion of widely used processes and novel techniques, such as, surfactant-enhanced ultrafiltration, ground water and soil remediation, surfactant absorption and flotation processes, extraction processes, recycling of paper and plastics using surfactant, and analytical separations using surfactants.

Some of the semiaqueous cleaners in use employ terpenes as the cleaning agent, usually followed by a water rinse to remove the cleaner. Because terpenes are not miscible in water, these cleaners require the addition of surfactant to facilitate the water rinsing step, complicating recycling of the cleaner for reuse. A new critical cleaning solvent (CCS), named Synergy 3000 CCS{trademark} is a proprietary blend of terpene and heterocyclic alcohol solvents formulated to remove polar and nonpolar contaminants such as rosin fluxes, machining oils, greases, waxes, tape adhesive residue and handling soils from electrical and mechanical components and assemblies. It is a high purity, low odor solvent that does not require surfactants for water rinsing, and is derived from naturally and annually renewable resources. It demonstrates a high loading capacity for soils, grease, and contaminants and is compatible with a wide range of engineering materials commonly used in electronics applications. All of its components are biodegradable, are approved as food additives, and have no known human health effects. It has been formulated to have a higher flash point than citrus terpenes and flammable alcohols, and can be recycled via distillation. This paper presents some of the tests and evaluations that were performed during the development of Synergy 3000 CCS{trademark}, hereafter referred to as CCS, as well as current and potential applications for the solvent.
