Responsibility knocks, and a reckless, hedonistic man responds and opens the door to love—thus is a daredevil snared. #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens brings you the third installment in THE ADVENTURERS QUARTET, continuing the drama of Regency-era high seas adventure, laced with a mystery shrouded in the heat of tropical jungles, and spiced with the passionate romances of four couples and their unexpected journeys into love. He has something to prove Captain Caleb Frobisher, hedonistic youngest son of a seafaring dynasty, wants to be taken seriously by his family, and understands he has to prove himself sufficiently reformed. When opportunity strikes, he seizes the next leg of the covert mission his brothers have been pursuing and sails to Freetown. His actions are decisive, and he completes the mission’s next stage—but responsibility, once exercised, has taken root, and he remains in the jungle to guard the captives whose rescue is the mission’s ultimate goal. She will risk everything Katherine Fortescue has fled the life of poverty her wastrel father had bequeathed her and come to Freetown as a governess, only to be kidnapped and put to work overseeing a child workforce at a mine. She and the other captured adults understand that their lives are limited by the life of the mine. Guarded by well-armed and well-trained mercenaries, the captives have been searching for some means of escape, but in vain. Then Katherine meets a handsome man—a captain—in the jungle, and he and his crew bring the sweet promise of rescue. Together they will face the future The sadistic mercenary captain who runs the mine has other ideas, but Caleb’s true strength lies in extracting advantage from adversity, and through the clashes that follow, he matures into the leader of men he was always destined to be. The sort of man Katherine can trust—with her body, with her life. With her love. The first voyage is one of exploration, the second one of discovery. The third journey brings maturity, while the fourth is a voyage of second chances. Continue the journey and follow the adventure, the mystery, and the romances to the dramatic end. Can true love die? Or, neglected, does it lie dormant until the object of true desire is again within reach? Denied, does passion smolder, like embers waiting for the right conditions to flare into an all-consuming conflagration? #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens delivers the thrilling conclusion to her acclaimed series, THE ADVENTURERS QUARTET, a passionate Regency-era drama played out on the high seas and in the sweltering heat of tropical jungles, ultimately reaching a scintillating climax in the glittering ballrooms of Mayfair. The eldest of the Frobisher brothers and widely known as the lord of the privateers, Royd Frobisher expects to execute the final leg of the rescue mission his brothers have been pursuing. What he does not expect is to be pressured into taking his emotional nemesis, childhood sweetheart, ex-handfasted bride, and current business partner, Isobel Carmichael, with him. But is it Isobel doing the pressuring, or his own restless unfulfilled psyche? Resolute, determined, and an all but unstoppable force of nature, Isobel has a mission of her own—find her cousin Katherine and bring her safely home. And if, along the way, she can rid herself of the lingering dreams of a life with Royd that still haunt her, well and good. Neither expects the shock that awaits them as they set sail aboard Royd's ship, much less the new horizons that open before them as they call into London, then, armed with the necessary orders and all arrangements in place, embark on a full-scale rescue-assault on the mining compound buried in the jungle. Yet even with the support of his brothers and their ladies and, once rescued, all the ex-captives, Royd and Isobel discover that freeing the captives is only half the battle. In order to identify and convict the backers behind the illicit enterprise—and protect the government from catastrophic destabilization—they must return to the ballrooms of the haut ton, and with the help of a small army of supporters, hunt the villains on their home ground. But having found each other again, having glimpsed the heaven that could be theirs again, how much are they willing to risk in the name of duty? Learn the answer and revel in the action, drama, intrigue, and passion as the Frobishers—with help from Wolverstone, the Cynsters, and many familiar others—steer the adventure to a glorious end. "This book is an important contribution to the study of African American art and of American art in the twentieth century. It makes use of previously unexamined papers, interviews, and works of art and does so with originality and skill." --David Leeming, author of Amazing Grace: A Life of Beauford Delaney This book is the first in-depth treatment of the life and work of the prolific African American painter Joseph Delaney, a gifted artist whose impressive achievements on canvas were somewhat overshadowed during his long career by those of his older brother Beauford. Frederick C. Moffatt deftly interweaves biography, art history, and critical analysis in his study of this neglected African American artist. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of a Methodist preacher, Delaney renounced his family and moved to New York. Here he studied with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League and thereafter devoted a career to figure drawing, portraiture, and to humorous interpretations of city life. Joseph Delaney's impact on the New York art scene was notable. Though he didn't arrive until a decade after the flowering of the Harlem Renaissance, he kept pace with a leading echelon of African American painters and graphic artists over a fifty-year period. This group included such veteran practitioners as Palmer Hayden, Ellis Wilson, Lois Mailou Jones, and, until his 1953 departure for Paris, Beauford Delaney. Late in his life, Joseph returned to his childhood roots, accepting a visiting artist's appointment at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Vividly drawn, judiciously researched, and copiously illustrated with both color and black-and-white reproductions, Moffatt's critical biography draws liberally on his subject's own diaries, essays, and poetry, as well as on numerous other sources, to offer an illuminating narrative that firmly establishes Joseph Delaney's importance within the history of twentieth-century American art. Frederick C. Moffatt is emeritus professor of art at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is the author of Arthur Wesley Dow, 1857-1922, and Errant Bronzes: George Grey Barnard's Statue of Abraham Lincoln. His articles have appeared in Winterthur Portfolio, New England Quarterly, and Archives of American Art Journal.
