FINALLY!!!! - There is a book written about the electric power grid and how it is operated, that you can enjoy, and learn a great deal from. This book offers the reader an understandable explanation of what is occurring every second of every day on the electric power grid. There are many books about the power grid that are explanations suited for advanced industry experts or electrical engineering students. In fact, several of them are listed in one section of this book. However, this book offers the only explanation I am aware of that will appeal to a large audience ranging from your friend next door, to men and women in the industry who want to know more about how their job function fits in with all the other parts of the grid. It is written using more than 200 years of accumulated power grid operations experience from me, and five or six colleagues I used for advice and opinions. I am certain guys like Norm, Cliffy, Sammy and possibly even Woody would have a much better understanding of the power grid after reading this book. When you read it, you will learn about subjects such as: historical blackouts, what power grid operators are watching, the effects of Super Bowl Sunday and Christmas lights on the grid, the electric grid in Japan, and many, many other items of interest. If you've ever been curious what it costs to run some of the appliances in your home, you are looking at the right book, because that is explained as well. It is enjoyable to read, will someday make you look like a genius, and is guaranteed to make you laugh a few times while you read it. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Smart Grid is considered as one of the most critical cyber-physical infrastructure; leveraging the advanced coupled communication infrastructure, it is designed to address the limitations and drawbacks of the current power grid and offer a more available, reliable, and efficient power delivery system. Despite its promised advantages, coupling a cyber system with the power grid would increase the grid attack surface by adding known cyber vulnerabilities and threats. Furthermore, security solutions proposed for the traditional power system may not be applicable for the smart grid since they do not consider all smart grid added characteristics (e.g., synchronization). Therefore, it is crucial to lay out a study for the smart grid vulnerabilities and propose corresponding security evaluation and mitigation techniques. In this thesis, our objective is to model the smart grid as a cyber-physical network considering all the characteristics of power and communication networks as well as the interdependencies among their component. We first propose a contingency analysis security evaluation framework for the smart grid considering concurrent failures resulting from malicious compromises. The proposed framework enables the utility to quantify and monitor the criticality level of the system under study from the security perspective, and decide on proper mitigation/protection actions to avoid catastrophic power outages. Then, we investigated the critical link (power or communication) identification problem in the smart grid. We highlight the importance of considering the interdependencies among the power and communication network components by showing how a single failure in one side of the grid (cyber or physical) could cascade through both sides and disrupt the power delivery service for a large area immediately. We study the minimum number of links whose removal would have the largest impact on the system in terms of unserved load. The result of this study is beneficial for efficient and optimal resource allocation while designing protection mechanisms for the grid.Finally, we address the power service restoration problem through network reconfiguration in the presence of distributed energy storage systems. Service restoration is a mandatory procedure which should be performed after any failure occurrence in order to increase the consumer satisfaction and decrease the penalty paid by utility. In this chapter, an optimal restoration approach is devised which is a combination of minimizing the restoration time, unserved load, and energy storage usage cost.

In 2017, nearly 60 million households in Indonesia were connected to the national power grid. Accordingly, we believe that their ‘voice’ is important to maintain democratic and participatory values in planning electricity services. However, what is actually the voice of electricity users in Indonesia? This book presents the real experience of households, some of the grid users in Indonesia. Through a series of surveys in 2017, households in three cities in Western, Central, and Eastern Indonesia shared their experiences and preferences regarding their electricity supply. They offered their opinions about the stability and reliability of electricity supply, how they coped with blackouts, and what impacts power interruptions had on their daily lives. Because of the frequent power outages, the users started to think about the importance of having a back-up power generator at home. Given that Indonesia has high solar irradiance the whole year through, we also observed the users’ attitudes toward solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The book starts with a brief introduction about Indonesia followed by the status and challenges of power supply in the country. Then, in the middle section, the users’ voices are presented. Finally, the potential of PV systems, as a promising solution to increasing electricity access and improving the reliability of electricity supply in this tropical country, is presented.
