"The Walk," a meditation on walking and on the literature of walking, ruminates on this pervasive, even commonplace, modern image. It is not so much an argument as a journey along the path of literature, noting the occasions and settings, the pleasures and possibilities of different types of walking--through the country or city, during day or night, alone or with someone--and the literatures--the poems, essays, stories, novels, and diaries--walking has produced. Jeffrey C. Robinson's discussion is less criticism than appreciation: with an autobiographical bent, he leads the reader through Romantic, modern, and contemporary literature to show us the shared pleasures of reading, writing, and walking.

Cultivate Intimacy and Honesty in Your Youth Ministry’s Small Groups Here are 31 small-group meetings about--well, small groups. After all, the kind of honest sharing, perceptive silence, compassionate boldness, and mutual growth that are the marks of an effective and attractive small group don’t always come naturally. With the complete sessions in Talking the Walk--all of them customized precisely for small groups--—you can lead your small group of teenagers from just getting comfortable with kids they don’t usually hang with, to talking honestly, listening carefully, and understanding themselves and each other. The first five meetings are a gradual, gentle introduction to the idea of communication, confidences, and listening skills--the mechanics and heart of small-group dynamics--then on to more than two dozen topical meetings about issues that matter most to adolescents: how to face life’s tensions; self esteem; change; sexuality; giving and receiving love; clarifying future goals; friends; family; forgiveness; diversity; conflict; moods; priorities--and more, all of them based in Bible passages . . . appropriate for mixed groups of churched and unchurched kids . . . and each session with more than enough creative and quirky ideas, so you can select those that best fit your style and your small group’s temperament. Perfect for outreach and evangelism groups, discipleship groups, Sunday school, midweek cell groups--any time you want small groups of your students to grow together in community, in intimacy, in faith. (Previously published as Honest to God) 31 sessions.

In post-modern America, aThe Christian Religiona is seen as backward, stale, and not politically correct. Many churches have attempted to adapt by blending into the liberal landscape. He came to seek and save the lost. Those who respond to His call are His disciples. Marvellous M. Mhloyi is a success by any standards. A woman who, when education for women in Africa was not a priority, rose above all these obstacles to become the first Zimbabwean woman to graduate with a PhD in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. She also founded the Center For Population Studies at the University of Zimbabwe where she is a professor and consultant to numerous non-profit organizations nationally and internationally. Born of Christian parents, she grew up as a Christian in the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe. Between 1977 and 1984 she was in the United States of America as a student at West Chester University and University of Pennsylvania, respectively. As she tried to go to church, she was discouraged as she noted fellow Christians discriminating against her and her husband. She stopped going to church until she was born again in 1993. She remarks, "I did not understand it when people asked me if I was born again." In 1993 when the Lord visited her, she then realized that she had been socialized to be a Christian; she notes: "now I am born again, I have a personal relationship with God, and this is the sweetest relationship one can ever have." In 1999 the Lord created a deep sense of ignorance about Christianity, a religion she believed in. The level of ignorance was so intense that she only felt relieved when she enrolled in a Bible school. As an intellectual it was not easy for her to give her whole being to a God she could not see or articulate logically; but glory be to the Almighty who had prepared her to be receptive and to heed to the call to Ministry. She became a pastor in 2001. She is currently a pastor, a mother of one daughter and a son-in- law, a grandmother of three and a mother to many. She had been married for 37 years before her husband Gilford passed on in November of 2008 and she often remarks, "I am grateful to God that my husband knew and loved God; I pray nothing will dissuade me from walking the walk till I meet up with him at home."

Ranging from one-page fantasies to novella-length studies of everyday existence, The Walk reveals the irresistible genius of one of the twentieth century's greatest writers. Under-appreciated even in his own lifetime, Robert Walser has nonetheless been recognised by such writers as W.G. Sebald, Susan Sontag, Franz Kafka, Herman Hesse and J.M. Coetzee. Like Kafka and Sebald, Walser wrote about the solitude and unease of human existence. Honest, wry and idiosyncratic, his stories are snapshots of the lives great artists, poor young men, beautiful women and talking animals alike. Ranging from the realist to the allegorical, the short fiction collected in this volume demonstrates Walser's uncanny ability to capture both life's strangeness and its small joys.

"One of the best leadership books of the year." -strategy+business Leadership is the art of transforming how people think, feel, and act. Though some experts make it seem complicated, it really has only two elements: what you say and what you do. And according to Alan Deutschman, most leaders focus too much on words and not nearly enough on setting an example. Deutschman profiles a wide range of leaders (in business, education, the military, and nonprofits) who always walked the walk, especially when times got tough. In a skeptical world, that gave them more credibility than even the best possible speeches. Deutschman also shows the devastating consequences of not walking the walk, even on seemingly minor matters. Consider how the CEOs of GM and Chrysler hurt their chances of a government bailout by flying their private jets to Washington. The eye-opening examples in Walk the Walk will inspire leaders at all levels.
