“Fun…and full of smart science. Fans of CSI—the real kind—will want to read it” (The Washington Post): A young forensic pathologist’s “rookie season” as a NYC medical examiner, and the hair-raising cases that shaped her as a physician and human being. Just two months before the September 11 terrorist attacks, Dr. Judy Melinek began her training as a New York City forensic pathologist. While her husband and their toddler held down the home front, Judy threw herself into the fascinating world of death investigation—performing autopsies, investigating death scenes, counseling grieving relatives. Working Stiff chronicles Judy’s two years of training, taking readers behind the police tape of some of the most harrowing deaths in the Big Apple, including a firsthand account of the events of September 11, the subsequent anthrax bio-terrorism attack, and the disastrous crash of American Airlines Flight 587. An unvarnished portrait of the daily life of medical examiners—complete with grisly anecdotes, chilling crime scenes, and a welcome dose of gallows humor—Working Stiff offers a glimpse into the daily life of one of America’s most arduous professions, and the unexpected challenges of shuttling between the domains of the living and the dead. The body never lies—and through the murders, accidents, and suicides that land on her table, Dr. Melinek lays bare the truth behind the glamorized depictions of autopsy work on television to reveal the secret story of the real morgue. “Haunting and illuminating...the stories from her average workdays…transfix the reader with their demonstration that medical science can diagnose and console long after the heartbeat stops” (The New York Times).

A “bracing, hilarious and dead on” account of a college graduate’s chronic underemployment (The New York Times Book Review). In ten years, Iain Levison has lived in six states and worked at forty-two jobs, from fish cutter in Alaska to furniture mover in North Carolina, film-set gopher, oil deliveryman, truck driver, and crab fisherman. He quit thirty of them, got fired from nine, and has difficulty remembering the other three. Whatever could go wrong often did, hilariously. A Working Stiff’s Manifesto is a funny book about the not-so-funny experience of dead-end jobs—the real thing, written not by a high-priced journalist disguised as a counter clerk, but by a genuine wage-dependent, hand-to-mouth working stiff, too well-off for welfare yet too broke to fit a consumer demographic. He works to keep his car running to get back and forth from work. He works to get by and get back to square one for the next day’s labors. And in this book, he finally gets some use out of the forty thousand he blew on his English degree—providing an “entertaining, unusual mix of autobiography and social commentary [from] a sharp-eyed, impassioned critic of the American workplace” (Publishers Weekly).

Of all the memoirs of the wild West, Frank Crampton’s autobiography of his youth in the mining camps ranks with the very best. Scion of a wealthy New York family, Crampton ran away from home in 1904 at the age of sixteen. Two bindle stiffs picked him up in a Chicago railroad depot and led him west as they taught him to survive first as a hobo and then as a hard-rock miner. In the first two decades of this century Crampton lived and worked in almost all of the important mining camps in the Westin California, Arizona, Nevada, and Colorado as a miner, assayer, surveyor, and finally one of the West’s best-known mining engineers. In miners’ lingo “deep enough” meant “I don’t care” or “I’ve had it”; the term was applied to anything one did not like or wanted nothing more to do with. Many of the experiences that Crampton describes were of that order. He was trapped in a collapsed mine shaft for ten days. He was in San Francisco at the time of the great earthquake and in Ludlow, Colorado, during the Ludlow Massacre. He lived in Death Valley among the desert rats and witnessed the last days of the old French prospector John Lamoigne, who “never looked for anything where anyone else would expect to find it, but where others were afraid to try.” He become so bored with barrooms and gambling dens at one time that he hired a girl of the line in Goldfield, Nevada, just for an hour’s conversation. So many adventures, so much camaraderie, novelty, and humor are crammed into this true-life story that fiction pales in comparison. Bindle stiffs, tinhorns, tenderhorns, bohunks, entrepreneurs, politicians, wives, and women of the evening crowd the pages. This reprinting of the 1956 edition of Deep Enough is enhanced by two new maps and additional photographs from the author’s personal collection. In reading it, a new generation can share the extraordinary characters, hardships, and plain fun that Frank Crampton knew between the ages of sixteen and thirty.

Grant Stoddard left Britain for the States with the clothes on his back, a fascination with all things American, and a burning hope for something bigger. But with no steady job, no money, and no girlfriend, the starry-eyed young Englishman's excitement was shrinking fast. Then fate in the guise of an X-rated online contest intervened. Winning first prize -- sexual intercourse with an infamous married sex columnist -- changed everything. With a shot of much needed confidence, the sensitive lad emerged as the mascot of Nerve.com, a gonzo sex columnist who would begrudgingly try any and every lurid thing his co-workers devised. From offering himself up as man-bait at a notoriously hard-core gay bar to attending an elite orgy with a blue-blooded date, Stoddard went where few men dare and lived to tell the tale. With a self-deprecating style and wonderful appreciation of the absurd, Working Stiff is a unique coming-of-age story from a very funny and irreverent new writer.
